The Austin American Statesman reported that a former Georgetown police officer was fired for drinking cactus juice. As a criminal defense lawyer, I try to see both sides of all stories. As a citizen, I am as fed up with all the instances of public officials committing crimes and getting nothing more than a slap on the wrist. It was shocking to me to read this article, and see such a drastic measure taken to discipline an officer for such a ridiculous reason.
I am interested if this officer will be charged criminally for this. If this officer is charged, I hope the officer has the resolve to take this issue to the citizens of Williamson County to see if they think an offense like this is worthy of marking someone’s criminal record.
There are a lot of reasons why I think someone should be fired from their public position. One might assume that there is some political reason for this firing, but when I read stories like this, it makes me happy to have my own practice.
